Miss BBW march 2011: Gisela Ramírez

Si quieres leer esta entrada en español pulsa aquí.

Gisela Ramirez is a girl just turned 24 who live in Sydney. But she is not the typical Australian girl, their Latin origins (his mother is from Argentina and his father from Colombia) give her wonderfully generous curves and a warmth in the expressiveness of her eyes and her face inheritance from his Latin blood.

Gisela is passionate about photography and fashion and she aspires to be the next revolution in the world of plus size fashion with their designs.

No shortage of admirers. Gisela has two successful web spaces (Gisela Rámirez y What Gisela Wore). In the webs she posts her thoughts and projects in the world of fashion. But also, and I think more importantly, serves as an example and inspiration to other women and girls BBW that (still) haven't got the confidence and self esteem that Gisela emanates from every pore of his skin.

Fortunately Gisela has agreed to answer several questions to know her a little better. I'm from Spain so forgive my bad English in the questions but wanted to make this entry in English to respect the exactly words of Gisela in the answers. If you wanna read this post in spanish click here.

-Hi Gisela, Thanks for giving us a little time to answer these questions. I must confess that I am your fan and closely follow your blogs and your projects. Tell us about how you discover the world of fashion and what is the reason because you wanna dedicate yourself to the fashion world?

Thanks for choosing me as your BBW of the month, it's very flattering!

Well, i'm not so much fascinated by the world of fashion, as i am by fashion and style itself. I've been making my own clothes since the age of 12, when i discovered existing clothing in my size wasn't very "cool". I have always aspired to be a fashion designer, but it took me a while to realise it was going to be in plus sizes.

After all, It wasn't until i started blogging that I discovered so many fat role models who thought the same way I do; Fashion is not meant to camouflage you or cast you into the shadows, fashion should turn heads.

-How is the status of the plus size market? How is its evolution and what can you offer to your vision of fashion?

I think the plus size market is growing steadily. Fat women have always been around, but designer's desire to provide stylish options is a progressive notion.

We've come so far from potato sacks and tents, but I think at the moment, stylish plus size fashion is still a toddler, learning to walk.

The current options usually only extend to a size 24 or 26, but women come in all shapes and sizes. I also believe there is a notion that the plus size women is after disposable polyester and acrylic clothing, whereas I always read labels, feel the handle of the fabric and am conscious of how long my clothing is going to last.

My vision is to give fat women a little luxury, in a very contemporary form; I'm going to break lots of rules and encourage people to experiment.

Here a serie of photos as an example of two things. The first is the sensual curves of a BBW woman and the second that creativity can overcome all barriers. Gisela hasn't got stockings for her size? No problem, she made her own stockings from a pantyhorse. I only can say one thing... you look spectacular.

-The truth is that I have wanted to see these revolutionary ideas you mention, some things we have already seen on your blogs and I wanted to talk about them. It is clear that in actual world to have commercial success must have an internet presence. We may soon see your creations on your blogs but I liked that you chose a format that allows you to have much direct contact with your followers. What is the reason to this election and in the future will you follow the same way?

I totally agree, the internet is the way of the future and a really flexible way for an indie, like myself, to start out. I don't need to employ anybody to run my shop, I am open 24 hours a day and I have a global following, not just a local one.

I have a real love affair with my blog, and I definitely see it continuing. I honestly don't remember how I came across the fat online community but these are the blogs that first inspired me to start my own. ... Stephanie, Sakina, Jaya, Christina, Gabi, Jay Miranda and of course my fellow Aussie & the lady who brings all the fat women together in one blog, Francis.

Obviously as I get busier I will have to be very selective about what I post on my blog, but I am always going to keep in contact as much as I can.

-Many of the girls who follow you say you are an inspiration to them and your example has helped to love them a little more. How do you feel about it?

It feels amazing, I know how much it's possible to be influenced by someone you can relate to, and to know that women relate to me.. It makes me so happy.

I can't really say anything else about it, I'm really lucky. It's what keeps me blogging!

Blogging is like putting your thoughts out there in this big wide ocean and when people get your message and it helps them on their journey, there isn't really a better outcome than that is there?

-In your case, is that confidence and self esteem has always been in you? Or has been a journey of personal growth? How did you learn to love yourself in this world that give too much importance to the size?

I'm not unique in that my self esteem and confidence has been a winding road. I have bad days like anybody else, but my bad days no longer have anything to do with my body image.

I can't pretend to know the secret to body confidence, and i think a lot of it boils down to developing a thick skin. We don't yet live in a world where everybody tolerates and accepts each other but despite this somehow I have realised my body is beautiful. Even if it doesn't look beautiful to someone else, It's my responsibility to give it love and honour it the way it deserves. For me, honouring my body and myself is to make sure that when i walk down the street, people know I love myself, and I do that with my attitude, with the clothes I wear.

-Just as you are an example for other girls ... which BBWs do you admire?

Too many! Infact some of them are in your blog! Singer Beth Ditto, adult film star April Flores, fatshion bloggers Stephanie Zwicky and Gabi Gregg, Sakina, plus size models Fluvia Lacerda, Ashley Graham and Denise Bidot!

That's not mentioning all the fatshionistas on tumblr!

-I wish you all the luck in the world both personally and professionally. I will follow carefully Gisela Rámirez and What Gisela Wore to see your jump in the fashion world. But to finish I want ask you a question that always made a friend of mine ... What is success for you?

Success for me is happiness. Someone once said "No matter what you're doing with you're life, you're not wasting it if you're happy!" I'm happy pretty much everyday, so i'm doing well :)

That being said, what would make me the happiest this year? A successful release of my first collection... Fingers crossed and thanks for having me!!

Thank you for your blogs, your ideas, your projects and answer these questions. Know that I have crossed all my fingers (including my toes) to make this year a great success for you.

Kisses and hugs from the other side of the planet.

PS: Everyone who visits this blog know my passion for comics and more specifically by the superhero comics so I could not finish this post without putting some pictures of the girl that from now is the superheroine of this blog forever... SUPERGIGI. I believe that her superpowers are obvious ...
